CDCR Tablet Communications Update
“Beginning on, Aug. 1, 2024, there will be changes to our communication services for incarcerated individuals. CDCR will reduce the amount of free outgoing e-messages available through institution tablets or kiosks due to the additional funding for this effort expiring.
Currently, CDCR covers the cost of 15 e-messages sent by incarcerated individuals per week. The tablet provides 20 free e-messages per week, with CDCR covering the cost of 15 e-messages and ViaPath covering the remaining 5. As of Aug. 1, 2024, CDCR will no longer fund the 15 free e-messages per week. Instead, ViaPath will continue to provide 5 free e-messages per week. Any e-messages beyond the 5 allocated by ViaPath for the Incarcerated population will incur a charge of $0.05 each for outbound messages.
It is important to us that you are aware of these changes and understand their implications. We remain committed to providing alternative means of communication for incarcerated individuals, including access to tablets, free phone calls, and in-person visitation. Additionally, CDCR continues to prioritize rehabilitation and support for our incarcerated population.
We appreciate your continued dedication and support as we navigate these changes together.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our mission and values.
